Analytical presentation
After secondary studies at the Saint-Julien college in Ath, Roger Van Schoute began studying history at the Catholic University of Louvain (dissertation entitled: The Nivillois patriciat at the end of the Middle Ages. First milestones, 1956), during which he met his future wife, Monique Verboomen, with whom he collaborated all his life. On a train, he spoke with Canon Raymond Lemaire (1878-1954) who invited him to take some courses in art history. This led him to begin studies in this subject at the same time (dissertation entitled: Hieronymus Bosch: problems of method, 1957). In 1961, he defended his doctoral thesis: Flemish paintings from the 15th century from the collection of Isabella the Catholic preserved at the Capilla Real in Granada: History of the collection and study of the works considered particularly from the angle of pictorial execution, written under the direction of Jacques Lavalleye (1900-1974). He was particularly active in teaching didactics to students in art history and archaeology, before the appointment of a professor dedicated to this subject. He was also a professor at the Higher Institute of Art History and Archeology in Brussels (1968-2008).
