Raising the question of women and gender in art history is not a current fad or a passing trend. These are rich and complex issues that have been built up over the long term through research, exhibition practices and mediation.
But the memory of women’s history and of those who write it is fragmentary and precarious.
As art historians, we need precursors in order to place ourselves within a lineage of practices, thoughts, and knowledge. We hope that the study day “Précursœurs : Héritages et perspectives des questions de genre en histoire de l’art.” will be a space for dialogue.
It brings together both the researchers who have opened and consolidated the field of women’s history, gender issues and feminisms in art history in Belgium over the last twenty-five years, and those who continue to explore these areas of research.
