How to participate?

We would like to be able to involve as many researchers as possible in this project so that everyone can put forward their knowledge, their analytical perspectives, their expertise and their questions.

To submit your editorial proposals, we ask that you please complete the submission questionnaire.

After receiving the agreement of the Editorial Committee, we will ask you to comply with the editorial instructions by encoding your texts directly on the Belarthis platform.

These contributions can be written individually or collectively. They will be subject to a double blind peer review before being published on the Belarthis website.

Conditions for submitting notices

The call for contributions for Belarthis is permanently open. Authors can submit their proposals at any time of the year. Suggestions for future contributions should be submitted via the Belarthis submission questionnaire. Interested authors can propose the subjects on which they wish to write an article or suggest specific themes as well as experts that Belarthis could solicit.

We want to involve as many researchers as possible in this project so that everyone can contribute to it by bringing their knowledge, expertise and questions. These notices can be written individually or in collaboration with other researchers, according to the wishes of their authors. Once the form is received, the Office will review the proposed topics and contact the suggested authors.

Belarthis publishes three types of articles: biographical articles, presentations of institutions, associations, publications and events, as well as thematic articles. For each type of article, a template and editorial guidelines specifying the expected structure and content are provided (see below). After acceptance of the article, the Office will (1) specify the type of notices as well as the model to follow and (2) provide the author with an identifier and connection data allowing access to the Belarthis article submission platform. Only articles respecting the model provided and submitted via the platform will be taken into account for evaluation and publication. The Office will agree with the author a submission deadline, generally 3 months, after which the article will be subject to evaluation by double blind peer review.

Editorial process

Notices submitted to Belarthis follow a double blind peer review process. Each notice is submitted to the Editorial Committee which decides whether the article respects the scientific quality standards and the main directions of the project. The members of the editorial committee are informed in the “Who are we?” tab.

The notices will be submitted to two evaluators: a member of the Editorial Committee and a member of the Editorial Committee of the Belgian Revue d’Archéologie et d’Histoire de l’art, as well as possibly to an external expert. The authors receive corrections and any comments or suggestions with a view to improving their contribution. Subsequently, the Editorial Committee makes the final decision on putting the notice online on Belarthis. They will be informed of the publication of the notice.

The Editorial Board oversees the editorial process and ensures the anonymity of authors throughout the evaluation process.

Open Access policy

The Belarthis online publishing platform offers immediate access to all its content, based on the principle that making research freely available to the public promotes a global exchange of knowledge.
As part of our mission to make publishing accessible, Belarthis charges neither APC (article-processing charge) nor ASC (article submission charges). Any reader can download the records free of charge, on a permanent basis.

License and copyright

Authors who publish in Belarthis accept the following conditions:

  • The authors retain their copyright and grant Belarthis the right of first publication, the work being distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution License 4.0.
  • Work published in Belarthis may be shared provided that the author is acknowledged and the initial publication in the journal is mentioned.
  • Authors may enter into separate contractual agreements for the non-exclusive distribution of the version published by Belarthis (for example, deposit it in an institutional repository or include it in a work), provided that acknowledgment of the initial publication is given.
  • Authors are permitted to distribute their work online (for example, via institutional repositories or their website) before and during the submission process, as this can foster productive exchanges and enable faster and wider citation of their work.

Privacy Statement

The names and email addresses provided on the Belarthis site will be used exclusively for the purposes declared by Belarthis and will not be communicated for other purposes or to third parties.

Archiving policy

The Editorial Board is responsible for publishing on Belarthis in separate articles, each on a dedicated page and depositing them on Zenodo, an open access multidisciplinary repository funded by the European Union and maintained by CERN, in connection with the OpenAire project. Zenodo meets the data management requirements of European Union-funded projects, such as Horizon Europe and ERC grants.

Instructions for authors

By submitting a manuscript to Belarthis, the author(s) represents that the manuscript constitutes an original work and has neither been previously published nor is currently being submitted elsewhere for publication.
They also guarantee that the sources of any ideas and/or expressions not belonging to them have been correctly attributed by means of quotation and/or quotation marks.

Authors are responsible for submitting images with full references, obtaining written permission to include any images or works for which they do not own copyright, or to adapt such images or works for inclusion in their articles. The copyright holder must be expressly informed that the image (or images) will be made available online free of charge, as part of the article, under the Creative Commons “Attribution 4.0 International” license, in a non-profit, open access educational publication. Authors are responsible for informing the Editorial Board of any possible copyright issues and licensing issues regarding the use of images and quotations.

Authors are required to respect the instructions relating to references and submission procedures when sending their manuscript to Belarthis. They declare that they will not publish manuscripts presenting the same research in different journals or publication outlets, which would constitute an unethical editorial practice and could result in the rejection of a manuscript under review or the retraction of a published article.

When the manuscript concerns commercial software, hardware, or other products, authors must include, at the beginning of the manuscript, a statement either indicating the absence of conflicts of interest or describing the nature of any potential conflicts. Finally, all sources of research funding must be disclosed in the manuscript.

The authors of a manuscript agree that, if it is accepted for publication in Belarthis, the published article will be subject to a Creative Commons “Attribution 4.0 International” license. This license allows authors to retain their copyright while allowing anyone to download, reuse, reprint, modify, distribute and/or copy the final version of the articles, provided that the works are properly attributed to their authors. For more information, please refer to the copyright and license terms (see above).

It is not necessary to request additional permissions from either the authors or the Editorial Board, although it is appreciated to inform the Office of each reuse of articles. The names of the authors must be indicated in the article in the order of their contribution, each author being responsible for his or her own contribution. Only persons who have made a substantial contribution should be credited as authors; those whose contribution is indirect or marginal (for example, colleagues or supervisors who proofread drafts or provided proofreading assistance, as well as heads of research institutes/centers/laboratories) should be cited in an “Acknowledgments” section at the end of the article, immediately preceding the list of references. The corresponding author must ensure that only the appropriate co-authors appear on the article, that all listed co-authors have viewed and approved the final version of the article, and that they have consented to its publication.

Authors have the option to submit a short biographical note and contact information to accompany their publication, such as a business address or ORCID number. The journal strongly recommends that all authors submitting an article register with the Open Researcher and Contributor Identifier (ORCID) in order to include it in the article’s author information. ORCID registration provides a unique, long-lasting digital identifier for the account, which allows for accurate attribution and improves the visibility of published articles, ensuring that the correct author receives appropriate credit for their work. Because the ORCID identifier does not change based on changes in name, affiliation, or research area, it improves the visibility of an author’s past work and facilitates communication with colleagues.

Responsibilities of evaluators

Reviewers work for the journal on a voluntary basis. They are free to decline invitations to review certain manuscripts, depending on their workload and commitments, whenever they believe it would be impossible for them to complete the review within the allotted time and with the attention necessary for the article. Reviewers who have agreed to review articles are generally expected to submit their reviews within four weeks. Reviewers should not agree to review articles for which they feel unqualified. They are required to recuse themselves if, at any time, it appears to them that they do not have the required expertise or that a potential conflict of interest could harm the objectivity of their review.

All manuscripts received for evaluation should be considered confidential documents and should not be shown or discussed with others unless expressly authorized by the Office. Reviewers are encouraged to express their opinions clearly, explaining and justifying any recommendations made. They should always provide detailed and constructive feedback to help authors improve their work, even if, in their judgment, the manuscript is not publishable. Reviewers should identify in their reviews relevant work that has not been cited by the authors as well as any omissions in proper attribution of sources. When observing bibliographic gaps, the evaluator must be precise about what is missing.

Reviewers should judge articles according to their own criteria and avoid suggesting that the article should be completely different. When they request the addition of additional information, this must remain feasible and not require complete new fieldwork.
